Studio for Interactive Sound

Studio for Interactive Sound (SIS) is an innovative and exciting project – the first of its kind in South Africa. It stimulates participants to investigate ways in which science and technology can be used in creative and meaningful ways.

Using computer programming and various kinds of sensor technology many things are possible:

  • dancers can create music through their movements, instead of merely performing to a predetermined score;
  • musicians can design new or modified musical instruments, giving them access to computer-enhanced features;
  • artists can work with computer programmers to invent ways of making their artworks interactive, responding to the viewer in exciting ways;
  • scholars can learn how to make new interactive instruments, compose music and use computer technology in innovative new environments;
  • teachers and health care practitioners can use technology in new instructional or healing modalities.
  • special needs/disabled people are able to create music by using their body movement to influence sounds (see KineKapa project for more information)
